Potty training and cloth diapers

I woke up this morning to Eden shouting for me. It was 3:33am. I went in and she had wet the bed. I've been working really hard with Eden on finishing up potty training and she has been doing great. Usually she only has to wear a pull up at night and during the day and nap time she is fine and hasn't had a problem. I then got the idea that maybe pull ups were hindering her since she could sleep entirely though the night and not have to worry about getting up to use the bathroom since she knew she had a pull up on. So, I decided to try putting her in her undies at night with plastic pants on over them...sorta like pull ups right? My thinking with this was that then she would be forced to get up and use the potty. Wrong. She just keeps sleeping! Every now and then I hear her getting up and that makes me happy and she wakes up dry. So I think we are on to something here. I read someplace that if you want to potty train, that you need to ditch the diapers/pull ups because they only provide a crutch and don't allow the little person to feel themselves wet. So I guess I'll have to endure through washing loads of wet laundry. I feel like we are almost there.

Chloe...she doesn't want to use the potty. Well, she likes to sit on the potty and pretend to push something out, but then stands up and says all done. I've been trying to bribe her with princess stickers. Telling her that if she goes in the potty, she'll get a princess sticker. She likes that idea. She likes to talk about going potty in the potty and how she will get a sticker, but I have yet to see potty in the potty. Maybe we're onto something? I've also switched her back to cloth diapers. For two reasons. First reason, it's cheaper than buying disposable diapers. A few years back I got a pattern for cloth diapers that fit newborn to toddler size. So I made a bunch. I went on a cloth diaper making marathon. However, Chloe is a heavy wetter. I even made extra soaker pads to put inside the cloth diaper and she still wets through those babies. Which I know, cloth diapers aren't as absorbent as disposables because they don't have any chemicals that usually absorb like a disposable has. Which is another thing I like, no chemicals. Another problem though, she smells like pee all the time and I feel bad. I wash diapers every other day and I wash the diaper covers in between washings and hang dry them. Why is she smelling like pee? I don't want my daughter to smell like pee, but I don't want to give up on cloth. Soooo many people use them for their kids, and I want to make it work. Especially since we will be having another baby in August, think of the money we'd be spending on diapers! Do I need better cloth diapers? I'm thinking I do. Do any of you have experience with cloth diapers?

So after I got Eden cleaned up, I went back to bed. Only to toss and turn and repeatedly look at the clock and think to myself, I'm hungry. So I stayed in bed until 5am and then got up to eat. Today will be a long day, perhaps I will take a nap, I think I'll need it!

  1. Go Eden on the potty training! KJ is still wearing pull-ups at night, but I'm not willing to try underwear at night because she wakes up with a really wet Pull-up every morning. She's one that probably won't be night potty trained until kindergarten or first grade.

  2. Linds- I know this is an old post but I just wanted to comment on the cloth diapers. My mom bought me fuzzibunz cloth diapers for Landon in a one size that grows with baby and they are awesome. Not to mention they are really cute too. The initial cost is a little pricey but if you think about how much you will spend on disposable diapers it is definitely worth it. You can double up on the cloth too and they come with 2 cloth liners per diaper, one that is short for when baby is little and one that is long for when baby is bigger. Check out the website it is called fuzzibunz. They give you credit on your purchases too!
